search assistant malfunctioning

Using XP/IE 6 ... always used search assistant with icons in main window ...
a couple of days ago ... when i click on a site in the left window the site
clicked on opens in the left window instead of the main window ... of course
reading anything in the left window is impossible but more importantly once
the site opens in the left window ... all search results are lost ... there's
no previous or next button options at this point either and a new search must
be started ... the only way to open a site in the left frame list without
losing the search results is to open the site in a new wiindow ... this i
find takes way more time than needed ... and is really a nuisance ... has
anyone had this problem and if so have you been able to fix it? thanks!

If you are using IE's default search, now named Windows Live Search, this is
a known issue with the coding on that search page. Hopefully they will fix
this soon. There are several other posts on this newsgroup re this problem
going back to October 1st. Change your search provider, to Google, let's
say, and the problem goes away.

Thank you Jon for the quick reply. Stayed up last night and finally figured
that if I juggle the providers I got close to what I needed although for me
when clicking the URL on the left it now opens a new window rather than the
already opened main window. Less annoying but better than before. But I
went back to the prior posts as you suggested and learned the "drag and drop"
feature which works fine with any configuration of the serach engine. Even
if this glitch isn't worked out with the drag and drop option it's the same
anyway. Thanks again. There's no way I would have figured this out and
contacting MSN did not help except that they directed me here.
