search and System Restore

Dear All
2 problems:

1.When I click on search from the start menu, it will not load, the
egg-timer is on, but the only way to get out of this, is click the reset
button.

If I go to a explorer window, like Mt Computer and then click on search from
the toolbar, it works.

2. I tried doing a System Restore just in case I had done something wrong,
but System Restore shows me available restore points, but it will not
restore.

All help appreciate.
