windows xp pro system restore not working

System restore does not work.
I have Windows XP Professional with sp3. Zone Alarm pro firewall,
SpyBot-search and destroy, and Nod32 Antivirus are installed.
When I tried to use System Restore service nothing happens after I clicke
Next button on the Confirm Restore Point Selection window. I checked that
Turn off System Restore is unchecked on MyComputer/System properties/System
Restore panel. I used cmd /k net start command and saw that System Restore
Service is started. I tried the procedure in the Safe Mode too and with the
same result.
Any useful suggestion to resolve the problem will be appreciated.

Look through the best site for everything System Restore (and then I suggest
you stop relying on it and start using something a little more powerful -
like backups/imaging. ;-) )

Thanks for Yor prompt answer!
To better my feeling I used Windows Live safety scanner. just several
minutes ago. It worked several hours and found everything is OK.
The Event viewer gave the following:
The System Restore filter encountered the unexpected error '0xC000003A'
while processing the file '_filelst.cfg' on the volume 'HarddiskVolume2'.
It has stopped monitoring the volume.
I used your link but found nothing useful for my problem. Or rather I do not
understand advices from there.
I like to add some additional information that possibly may be connected to
my problem. Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool does not work. It even
does not start. I tried it from command window as run mrt, then I downloaded
executable file from microsoft page, but it does not work.
Maybe new information gave you more to gave me more good advices.
