System Restore turns off

Dear All
My System restore keeps turning itself off and when I turn it back on, I
cannot go back to a previous date, other than the date I am presently on.

Is there a fix please?

Hi,

There are several reasons this may occur. Let's take a look at Event
Viewer for any System Restore logs that may have been created recently
that may help us diagnosing the problem.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title “Source” at the top of the source name column in
the right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the
two arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event
information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two
event here. There’s no need to post duplicate Event ID’s.

How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs?

If free space of ANY monitored drive/partition falls below 50mb, System
Restore will go into standby mode and all restore points will be deleted
to regain free space. I would suggest disabling monitoring all
drives/partitions that Windows is NOT installed on. Then check the
amount of free space available on Windows drive/partition.

Dear Bert
I followed the instructions to turn off system restore on the second
partition of my hard drive.
When I first went to myComputer/Properties/system restore, System restore
was turned off on both drives, I managed to reset this so that System
Restore was available on Drive C only.

I restarted the PC and went to check if things where ok, but I have found
that system restore is turned off now on both drives and I cannot alter it.

Hi,

Open My Computer and right click on the C:\ drive then select
Properties.
How much FREE disk space is there?

Also, is there any new event's showing in event viewer with the 'sr' or
'srservice" source?

You should start looking at these troubleshooting steps also.

Other things are happening, NetMeeting opens then dissapears, and CuteFTP
opens then just puts the transfer engine in the taskbar.
Thanks
I will also have a look at the latest link you sent.
I have done a spyware and antivirus scan, only a few problems occurred.

Hi,

Well it looks like something is disabling System Restore monitoring as
fast as it's enabled.

If Real Player's installed, uninstall it.

Do you have any Norton products installed on the system?

Are there any other restore application such as GoBack, or IBM Rapid
Restore in use?

Let's try it one more time. Open SR Properties and uncheck Turn off
System Restore on all drives.
Before clicking Apply, Turn off monitoring on D:\ drive.
Click on C:\ then click Settings and set Disk space used to just under
1gb.
Now click apply then OK.

If still no joy, I would suggest reinstalling System Restore.

How to reinstall System Restore:

Dear Bert
Thanks for trying again,
Yes I do have Norton Anti Virus installed, but not Real Player.

However, I have been through everything you suggest, even down to
reinstalling system restore.

I switched off the PC for 20 seconds, switched it back on and guess what?
System restore was turned off!
It is using the maximum allowed space, 12% 7033mb

Look's like a full format and full system restore coming up! sigh!
Many thanks for all you help and patience.

Set the allowed space to 1000mb's.

Performing a clean boot may help identify what is causing this.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows XP

How to troubleshoot by using the System Configuration utility in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310560

Or, call MS and request the System Restore hotfix referenced in the
following article

Hard disk volume monitoring may stop in Windows XP

If you do go the route of format and install, keep checking System
Restore as software and hardware is installed. I would hate to see you
go through all this and still have the problem.

Dear Bert
Only managed to get back to this, this afternoon, sigh
Tried everything, thanks very much for all your time and effort.
Can I please ask you another question, as I am going to do the dreaded
reformat etc.

How do I save all my e-mail etc in my inbox (and sub-folders) from Outlook
Express?

I think I have saved everything else, the address book, accounts etc.

I have also checked my c: drive for any files etc and these are copied to
the partition (d: drive).

Before I reformat the system drive (c:) is there anything else I should be
doing? would it be worth running the repair first from the Windows XP disk?
Again
Thanks
Barry

Dear Bert
I have found a backup program for Outlook Express so hope that works,
Now going to try a repair and if that does not work, run a full reformat and
install.

Many thanks for all your help,
Regards
Barry
signing off to sort this out.
