SEAGATE EXTERNAL HDD

Hi. I just bought an external HDD. It is a Seagate 300 GB external
HDD with ULTRA enclosure. I am new to this and not sure what is going
on. I plug it in, and my computer running Windows 2000 does see it. I
think it sees it because it shows up in the "eject" icon when it comes
to disconnecting it safely from my computer. I do not see it as a My
Computer option though to transfer files to it. Do I need to
partition/format the HDD before using it? The instructions say to go
to Disk Management and "initialize" it. When I go to disk management,
it shows my HDD with a red minus sign through it saying it is
unallocated. But when I right click on the icon, it only lets me
choose, "properties" or "write signature." I wanted to make sure I was
doing everything correctly before proceeding. Thanks!

Yes, write signature, then partition and format your drive.
