Seagate Disc Wizard problem:

R

Robert

Sorry if this is kind of long but I want to try and give as much
information as possible so that I can get some help.

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP, and have 40gigs with 17.5 gigs
free. I only have one game that I play on it so memory shouldn't be an
issue. In addition, I have AVG, Comodo, Spybot and A-squard running on
it.

Ok, this is the problem; I recently upgraded my computer by installing
an LG DVD/RW drive and the installation and uploading of the drivers
apparently went ok after a few hitches.

I also bought a Seagate Pata/100 Baracuda 3.5" Internal hard drive so
that I could upgrade my computer from 40gigs to 160gigs.

I took my time, and replaced the old interface cable with the one that
came with the drive. I couldn't use the old one anyway because the
slave connector was too close to the master and couldn't reach the new
drive. I made sure the jumpers were set to 'cable select' and
connected it to the slave connection on the cable (gray)and used the
P3 power connecter and felt that I did everything right.

The C:\ Local disk uses the P5 power connector and the DVD/RW drive
uses the P6 connector. Although it shouldn't matter which since they
are all power connectors.

When I powered up my system (with crossed fingers) it did detect the
new drive. I then inserted the Seagate Disc Utility and started to
install the Seagate Disc Wizard but halfway through it gave me a
message that said that it was interupted and couldn't finish the
install and to try again. I thought at the time it was because a
Comodo pop-up appeared asking if I wanted to give the application
access to the Internet. However, I have tried to install this 4 times
now and it does the same each time. Once it hung up and I had to
reboot the system but again it failed.

While checking to see if indeed the hard drive was detected I found
this:

A: 3 1/2 (I removed this drive since it was useless)
C:\ Local disk
D:\ Seagate drive

It doesn't even show the LG drive! I took the same cable connector and
power connectors off the old cd-drive and put them on the LG DVD/RW
drive and set the jumpers exactly the same, so I don't understand why
it doesn't show it? Nor do I understand why the Seagate drive is shown
as the D:\ drive?

So what have I done wrong? I would appreciate any help, advice,
comments, suggestions.

The Seagate drive is showing up as D: because the DVD drive is not being
detected.
Use 'Device Manager' to see what it shows.

I checked Device Manage and this is what it shows:

DVD/CD-ROM Drives

DVD/RW-DVD/CD ROM
HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H55L
working properly

Disk Drives

ST3160815A
working properly
WDCWD400BB-75CLB0
working properly

Floppy Disk Drive
floppy disk drive
working properly
Although when I scanned for hardware changes this became highlighted.

Suggestions?

I have had problems in the past with Western Digital and either Seagate or
Maxtor drive combinations, especially when the WD drive is the Master. To
solve this I usually try different jumper settings on the second drive
(Slave, CS or No jumper) which in your case is the Seagate.

Also open 'Disk Manager' to verify that it can see both drives and the DVD.
I assume you are planning on using Seagate's Disk Wizard to move Windows
over to the new drive, if so I may have an alternative.

Are you sure D: isn't the Seagate Disc Utility CD?
Unless you have a good reason not to do so, use Windows XP Disk
Management to partition and format the new disk drive.

The Seagate disk can set the drive up.

Do you think he might not have the drive numbers allocated?

Robert, just to check - go get this and go to
My Computer - Drives and make sure at least the first
5 letters are checked.

Robert, the program is safe, it's from Microsoft.

I kept running into more and more problems as I went along so I
restored my system back to the point after I installed the DVD/RW
drive. What I want to do is clone my present drive to the Seagate
drive then disconnect the old drive and make the Seagate my bootable
primary drive by switching the cabling from slave to master. As I
understand it both jumpers need to be set for cable select.

Unfortunately I don't know what the settings are for the current Local
drive are. I tried pulling it out to see if it had a diagram on top
but it appears to be connected with something up front and I didn't
want to force anything.
In any case I'm hoping that the factory set them as cable select as
the default setting, otherwise I'll have to play around with them.

I checked Disk Management and it does show two hddrives with 0
(basic)being the C:\ drive with 37.27gb and 1(unknown) the new
Seagate drive with 149.05gb unallocated. It also shows the DVD drive
as CD-ROM 0(no media).

Yes, I am planning to use Seagate Disk Wizard to hopefully clone the
drives. I didn't think this was going to get so involved.

Thank you for taking the
time to help me

You were quite correct, after I went into disk management, I found
that that indeed was the case. As far as partitioning and formating
the new hard drive that may be a bit beyond what I want to do. All I'm
trying to do is clone one drive to another and then unplug the
original drive or switch the master/slave conectors and make the
Seagate the bootable master drive. I hope I'm making sense, all I want
to do is update my hard drive to make my computer last longer with a
bit more memory. The old drive I think is nearing its end so I wanted
to do this before it crashes. I could be wrong of course, but still
better safe than sorry.
I appreciate all the advice and suggestions to help me walk through
this.

Thanks,
Robert

After I did a System Restore and updated my computer I tried to
install Seagate Disk Wizard again. All was going well until I recieved
the following message:

The software you are installing for this software:
Acronis True Imag Backup Arhive Explorer
has not pass Windows Logo testing to verify it's compatibility with
Windows XP.

Continuing your installation of the software may impair or destabilize
the correct operation of your system either immediately or in the
future. (Yikes!) Microsoft strongly reccomends that you stop the
installation now (which I did) and contact the hardware vendor for
software that has passed Windows Logo testing. (I bought this through
Newegg on the only advice I got when I asked for reccomendations for
a DVD/RW and HDD drives ) So is Seagate and LG a piece of junk and
did I waste my money? I hope not, but If so, please offer suggestions
for a good, durable hard drive with something like 160Gigs of memory
that's Microsoft XP compatible. Or do I just need to purchase a
Microsoft compatible cloning software? CasperXP? Suggestions?

Thanks,
Robert

The CD that came with the new drive may be bootable, if it isn't there's
instructions on Seagates site on how to make one. Of course you have to
install the software first... At a minimum I'd go to their site and get
the latest version (just to be sure). I wouldn't get too worried about
it not passing the logo testing, after all you're going to install it,
clone the drive, and eventually uninstall it. The other option would be
to get Acronis True Image. Mine came with a bootable cd so I just use
that to create backups and images.

You might want to download the latest version of Seagate's Disk Wizard as
what is on the CD that came with your hard drive could be an older version.

I downloaded Disk Wizard from the Segate site just to make sure I had
a current version. Then started to install it and once again it gave
me the same warning message but this time I clicked to continue but
not long after it gave me the following message I have been getting.

The installation was interrupted before Seagate Disk Wizard could be
installed. You need to re-start the installer to try again.

I checked for updates (just to make sure) once again but everything is
current. What am I overlooking or doing wrong? Should I try another
cloning program that I can download? Comments/Suggestions?

Could be a "Windows Installer" error message/problem when try to install
Disk Wizard.
If this is the problem then see below:

The error message:

installed. You need to re-start the installer to try again.

mentions nothing about Windows or Windows Installer. I did look at
the links and I have SP2. Although I can uninstall and re-install it
are you suggesting that the problems lies with my Windows Installer
although it didn't mention it by name?

I did look through the second links suggestions and I checked to see
if Windows Installer was enabled and it is. Also at the top under
Symtoms it gives examples of error messages recieved which are nothing
like the message I got. I also read the other items but most don't
describe my problem and what I'm trying to do.

I also realized that the computer sees the DVD/RW drive as a CD-ROM
when I checked the disk management in administrative tools. I noted
this when checking this link that was part of the other link you gave
me:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883523/

However it requires a hotfix if I want to fix it now otherwise I have
to wait till the next service pak is issued.

The following I have no idea how to check:

Check that the installation path length and environment variables
length are execute 255 characters

Check if there pending installation/s:(in the add/remove program?)

Should I just try and uninstall SP2 and reinstall it? I read how to
reinstall it but how do I uninstall it? I suppose it would be a
prudent thing to do a System Restore before attempting all of this.

I didn't think this was going to get this involved just to add a DVD/
RW or hard drive!

No, was hoping the error message might indicate more detail.
As an alternative your old drive is a Western Digital and they have a
download page which includes a utility to perform a Drive to Drive copy.

Keep in mind the new drive must be partitioned and formatted before you
start.

Now you tell me! *L* That is probably the problem then. I thought Disk
Wizard would do all that for me. I have no idea how to do that kind of
thing. I suppose I should go to Windows XP Disk Management and check
it out and see if I can do it. Let me know of any other comments or
suggestions now that I know I have to do this.

Sorry, although I do have a copy of Disk Wizard I have never used it. What I
do is create an Image Backup (using Norton's Ghost) of my old C:
drive/partition. Then I partition and format the new drive and use Ghost to
restore the image to the new drive.

To do this however you need a separate drive or partition on an existing
drive to store the Image file (the image file can not be created/stored on
the same drive/partition you are trying to image). In my case I have a third
drive to store the image file on.

Ok, I went to Disk management and double clicked on the drive and
selected parition and followed the defaults settings and all was good
when I got this message:

Now I understand that I could just delete Seagates Disk Wizard but
what is this?

It also came out afterwards with this:

Cannot install this hardware. There was a problem installing this
hardware:

Volume

an error occurred during the installation of this device:

The driver cannot be installed because it is either not digitially
signed or not signed in the appropriate manner. Contact Hardware
Vendor.

then:

The operation did not complete because the partition or volume is not
enabled. To enable the partition or voume, restart the computer.

I deleted the partition since it didn't complete successfully. Why do
I keep getting these errors from Microsoft and is it ok to continue
and just ignore them? I certainly don't want to mess my computer up
but I want to get this hard drive running so I can clone my other
drive.

I understand all that but thats getting ahead of my present problems.
I can't even get my drive working let alone coping and making backups
etc. In the near future I plan to build an external hard drive with
enclosure/hard drive and PCI cars toupgrade to USB 2.0 for backups but
for the present I would like to get this working so I can just clone
the hard drive over using disk copy.
