DVD Drive install problem

Hello All,
A friend of mind owns a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop computer that came with
a CD-ROM drive only. I tried to Add a Lite-on DVD-RW burner and had a problem
doing so. Here are the details:

Original Dell drive (CD-rom) has jumper on "Cable select", IDE conn is "end
" of Cable. No audio cable attached (does has vol/headphone jack - odd that
it wasn't supplied). The Dell Manual stated in quotes " 8. Ensure that the
jumper setting for the new drive is set to "Cable select" (see the
documentation that came with the new drive for information). ". However the
Lite-on documentation says the jumper should be at either master or slave.
Too make a long story short the computer would not boot up at all, to the
computer would not recognizie one of the drives, were the results. Since I
was strapped for time (an appointment I could not miss) I ultimately just
replaced his cd-rom drive with the dvd-rw drive and kept all the original
jumper/cable connections, except that I added the missing audio cable.
Everything works fine. Computer recognizes the new drive. He could use
computer, and burner. After getting home from Appointment I realized that I
probably erred. I believe that I should have had the top bay to be the
DVD-rw burner with jumper set to "Master". Have the "end " IDE connector
plugged in. And since that drive also had a headphone jack, connect the
missing cable. Place old CD-Rom drive in lower, 2nd bay, and have jumper set
to "slave", and connect "middle" IDE connector. I believe that would solve
the problem, and was my original / gut feeling when starting this. However
the Dell doc says... and I checked , yes for installing a 2ND drive, not just
a NEW drive!
So my questions are: 1) Was my gut feeling right and I should have connected
everything as above , or am I missing something here? 2) Which Documentation
took precedence? The Dell, which I assumed knows the MTHRBD, or the Lite-on,
which knows the drive? 3) Does it matter which ribbon connector (IDE) goes on
which drive ( for ex. "middle" IDE conn to "master" drive which happens to be
in lower bay of tower, not the normal top bay location).

I've done several computers in the past. Even worked with more complex
issues, and never had a problem This "Simply" task making me feel like a
dummy. This is also the first system I seen with "cable select" actually
being used. Everything has always been "master/slave" in my realm. So
finally info on "cable select" would prehaps enlighten me.
Thank you all for your help in my confusion.

Follow the Lite-On directions for installing the drive and use the
standard master/slave settings, and the standard middle/end
connectors. Put the drives in the bays that make such a hookup the
easiest.

And this has WHAT to do with XP? Oh, right, NOTHING. This is a
purely hardware related question and does not belong HERE.

Been there done that. A couple of years ago I swapped out my dvd drive with
a newer one on my Dell, set it to cable select just like the second drive
installed, and my system would not even bootup, after retracing what I did
and getting nowhere I decieded to unplug all of my
Peripheral's (printer scanner etc...) usb connections and it booted up just
fine.Shut it back down and plugged them back in and it's been going ever
since. Like you I was scratching my head as to what happened and posted
here, the answer that I got (from an MVP that I trust) is "$hit happens".

Thanks for the response. It is what I wanted to do, but the DELL doc threw
me off.

Thanks for the input. It's good to know others have encountered similar
problems. Odd that unplugging everything eventually resolved tyour problem.
In my case the first time when system would not boot up my friend thought
monitor died. The second time, after changing jumper on Lite-on to 'master'
system booted up, but would not recognize 2nd drive. I'll be seeing him next
weekend, and hope to resolve all by then. I hope I don't have to tell him
"$hit happens". LOL

Ok ....Updated info. Past weekend reinstalled drives via the original
configuration that I thought would work, and It works just fine. The DELL
Docs is Flawed in saying that "when adding a 2nd drive, use "cable select".
I do appreciate the help. Thanks!

So... if I remember right, you were trying to install a Lite-On drive.
The instructions that came with that drive worked, right?
