I recently purchased a new laptop that is enabled with Windows XP. I am
having trouble using the touch pad on my new computer. Moving the arrow about
the screen is not a problem, but I cannot seem to get the scrolling section
of the touch pad to work. I have had this problem on other laptops, but have
not been able to solve it. When I move my finger up and down, as if trying to
scroll down a page, nothing happens. Any suggestions on this problem would be
greatly appreciated.

Hi Amy,

Go to Control Panel - Mouse to open Mouse Properties which should
include TouchPad Properties.
On my Toshiba Notebook there is a Gestures tab where the Scroll
settings can be adjusted. Make sure the scroll option is turned on and
width is set appropriately.

Thank you for your suggestion for fixing my scrolling problem. Unfortunately,
I have a Gateway laptop, not Toshiba. It seems that these laptops are set up
differently. The only adjustable property settings for my TouchPad are under
Advanced Settings. They include: Sample Rate, Wheel Detection, and Input
Buffer Length. I find nothing that actually says "Scroll" or "Scrolling".
Would you happen to know if either of those three settings have anything to
do with scrolling, and if so, which one? I appreciate your help.

Hi Amy,

Do you by change have a scroll wheel like the image in the site below?

What is the make and model of the notebook?

Thank you so much for your help with this matter. I followed your directions,
and I am now able to use the scrolling section of my touchpad. However,
another issue has been brought to my attention now that I can scroll up and
down pages: The scrolling seems to be automatic (I'm not sure if that's the
right word choice). When I slide my finger over the scroll region, the page
starts scrolling up (as I wanted it to), but then when i remove my finger
from the touchpad, the page continues to keep scrolling, without my help. Is
there any way to fix that as well? I would prefer to only have the page
scroll the same amount as I move my finger.
Thank you for your continued help.

Hi Amy,

I see this happen from time to time espicialy when the curser is in
the scroll area to the right of the window. I dont know of a fix for
this but you may want to play around with the Senativity setting of
the touchpad and see if that helps. You could also ckeck for a newer
driver for the touchpad on the Gateway site.
