Scrolling on start up

how can i stop the scree scrolling when i start up my xp home computer. I
wish to read the information inparticular i want to find out what is assigned
to the primarys & slave drives. also to whatever information is shown during
this start up period

Hit the "Pause" key (upper-right corner of your keyboard) at any time
during the bootup cycle, and things will freeze. When you've seen what
you need to see, and want to restart things, hit any key.
 
Isn't there a step by step boot choice anymore? I can't seem to find it now.
