Screensaver won't run

Have just bought a new laptop and found that the
screensaver only works if i don't open any programs.Once
i open anything the screensaver and power management will
not work.
If i just turn the laptop on and leave it the screensaver
and power management work ok.
Any help would be appreciated

MS resolution is to install the SP. Not worth the risk for just a
niggle.
