Screensaver will not start automatically

N

Neil Patterson

Hi

I have the same problem that many people seem to have, but noone has
the answer to.

My screensaver will not start automatically. It doesn't matter which
screensaver I use or the timeout I provide. If I use preview then it
does work.

I am running Windows XP with service pack 1 and nVIDIA graphics and
desktop control. (same problem happens when I disable nVIDIA nView
Desktop Manager).

My normal login account has administrative access.

I did notice something strange, that when I logged in as the actual
Administrator account, the screensaver did work.

Does anyone have the solution to this?

Thanks in advance
Neil.

Hi Neil,

Well, the problem is some background process is interfering. I would run a
comparison of tasklist (if you have XP Pro) from the admin and user accounts
to see what differs.

1. It rather looks like you have a problem entering S1 state. Set "Screen
Saver" to 'none' and see if your monitor goes blank according to your
"Power" settings - set "Turn off Monitor" to 1min. while you test.
2. Since you say that the screen saver feature works in other accounts, you
might want to copy some of those settings - check in Device Manager if the
Power Management options are correctly set for Mouse, USB Drivers, other
devices that can interfere with S1 state.
3. Check if you can enter Standby (S3) state or Hybernate - the problem
might be more complex than a "Screen Saver."
