Screensaver turns off after 60 seconds

I have just completed a clean install of XP and it is now fully updated with
SP2 etc.

The only problem I have is that the screensaver (any XP screensaver)
activates after the allotted time but then reverts to the desktop after
60seconds.

What could be causing this? It's driving me mad.
 
When setting up the screensaver, click the Power button.
The four settings should be something like:
1 hour
Never
Never
Never
One of your settings is set to 1 minute.
 
Unfortunately that doesn't solve the problem. I have tried setting
everything to 'Never' but the same thing happens. Interestingly, it does not
occur if I go into SafeMode and let the screensaver activate.

Just to clarify, when I said 'goes back to the desktop' i mean that it just
turns the screensaver off and i get the normal desktop (ie. whatever was open
etc prior to screensaver activating)
