Hi I am having the same problem with a new fresh install of XPPRO/WithSP2 on
a new machine.
"No screensaver" I have checked all bios settings, and video settings, the
power setup for HD etc:
using a 256MB ATI9600 Vcard. The card is working great, but cannot get the
screensaver to activate on the timer. (can manually preview). looking for an
answer as well hopefully. Thks,

Troubleshooting Screen Saver Issues in XP

From Kelly's site:-

Screen Saver Troubleshooting

Screen Saver Won't Start - Check your settings here: Go to Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop or: HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop
ScreenSaveTimeOut = (set your preference)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop

ScreenSaverIsSecure
0 - Screen savers are not password-protected.
1 - All screen savers are password-protected.

Verify that the ScreenSaver has been placed in the C:\WINDOWS\System32 Folder. Make
sure that the screensaver starts with " ss " e.g.. if the screensaver name is "
pictures " rename it to " sspictures".

Keith,
I am having the same problem with xp pro sp2. If you find any solution to
this problem please inform me so I can fix also.

Thanks

Paul,

Ditto here. I am having the same problem with a new fresh install of
XPPRO/WithSP2 on a new machine. I cannot get any of the standard
screensavers to activate. Have tried various settings, preview works but not
the actual screensaver.

I am using a Radeon ATI9550 card. Card is functioning perfectly. Only
problem is no screensaver. Any luck fixing yours?

Barry

I am also having the same problem!
I have searched everywhere on the net but can't find a soloution.
I have a fresh install of Win XP Pro SP2 and all available updates. Checked
registry settings and running applications but nothing seems to be set
incorrectly. Incidently, my other PC is also running Win XP Pro and has the
same problem.
Microsoft KB is no use, the articles they do have on this don't apply to me.
If anyone finds a solution, I would be very gratefull to know what it is!!

Cheers!!
Jon.

Screen Saver May Not Start in Windows XP

Troubleshooting Screen Saver Issues in XP

Posting from another user by the name of David:
â€I figured out what the problem is. It's the Microsoft Wireless Mouse. If I switch
the mouse to one with a tail the screensaver works.â€
then David posted again
â€I got a fix. I changed to connection to the computer using the USB to PS2 adapter
that came with the mouse. Now I get the screensaver. I would be interested to find
out why this works.â€

Hi TaurArian,
Many thanks for trying but have tried those suggestions already and still no
joy.
The Microsoft suggestion, article 326719, does not apply to me as it states:

"Your screen saver may not start if *ALL* the following conditions exist:
• The Human Interface Device Access service is running.
• An administrator logs on first and the *screen saver is automatically
started one time*. The administrator logs off and a non-administrator user
logs on to the same computer."

The screen saver never comes on at all, never mind once under the admin login.

It states that "This problem was first corrected in Windows XP Service Pack
1." I have SP2 installed so don't think this is the same problem.

The second suggestion is to check registry settings. Have already checked
these, ScreenSaverActive is set to 1,
ScreenSaverIsSecure - either 1 or 0 changes nothing,
Screensaver.exe points to a valid scr file.

The last suggesetion about changing to a a PS2 mouse I have looked into
also. Have swapped my regular (corded) USB mouse for an old PS2 mouse as
well as trying my existing USB one with an adaptor. Have tried neither on my
Laptop just relying on the touchpad. Updated drivers for all but still no
joy.

So, I'm still stuck!!
I do mean thanks though for taking the time to try and help though. It is
apreciated!! The problem is driving me up the wall, just can't seem to find
a soloution. Makes it all the more annoying as I work as an IT Support guy.
Just releived that none of the people I support have come to me with the
problem so far as I wouldnt know what to do!!

Whoever manages to work out whats up, I'll buy you a pint!!
Cheers!
Jon.
