Screensaver closes open program on resume

Can anyone explain why the following happens, and how to fix it:

If I leave a program open and in focus on the screen and the screensaver
kicks in, after I do any activity (press a key, jiggle the mouse) to resume
work, the program in focus closes. It happens no matter what screensaver is
running. This is very annoying, as I've lost work due to this problem. Of
course the workaround is to minimise all programs before leaving the PC for
an extended period, or disabling the screensaver. I'm using XP Home with all
the latest fixes and Service Packs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same problem. It will even try to shut down the
computer sometimes when there is no program running.
