Screen showing only wingdings

After using the "disk cleanup" utility in windows XP home edition, my
monitor screen now shows only unreadable characters (wingdings?). Safe mode
is also not readable therefore I can't get to "system restore" if that would
help.

What happened? But more important how can I get back to readable text?
