Screen settings blocked

My boyfriend recentlly had to erase all the data from his computer and
re-install WindowsXP due to Spyware. When XP finished installing the screen
was set to 800x600 for the resolution and as color quality of 16 bit. The
settings where blocked and after a lot of trouble he managed to change the
settings, The problem was the settings where now 600x400 and the screen was
in 8 bit. He managed to change it back to 800x600 but he left it in 8bit
because other wise the screen would go crazy. Before re-instal;ling XP the
screen was perfectly fine.
What's causing this problem and how can he fix it?

you need the driver (cd) for the graphic card. Right click my computer
icon, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager and check if there is a
question mark in Display adapter.
