screen resolution went down with Win XP

P

Peter

I upgraded from Windows 98 SE to Windows XP Pro. System
has a S3 ViRGE video card. I can no longer display
1024x768 resolution with 24bit color quality, am limited
to 800x600. Can't seem to find an updated driver. System
says it is using s3mvirge.dll (5.1024.329.002) dated
8/17/01

Related problem:
When I set resolution to 1024x768 and 16 bit color
quality, my mpeg files show up blank or fuzzy when using
Windows Media Player. Works fine in 800x600, 24 bit
color.

Any thoughts? Thanks for help.

Peter,
The S3 series is getting a bit ancient, and as you found out, there is no XP
driver available.
You can get reasonable ATI or NVidia cards starting from GBP50, rising to
about GBP400 for a top of the range.
I even had to let my trusty old 16MB Voodoo 3000 go, but that was mainly
because anything graphically demanding just laughed at it. The S3 even more
so...
Time to upgrade, I'd say.

Check the manufacturer's web site for a Windows 2000 driver. While not
guaranteed to be 100% compatible with XP, most will work.
