Screen resolution and desktop/application window size

I increased the display resolution, and now my desktop
and application windows are too big for my screen,
forcing me to navigate to all corners to do stuff like
reach close boxes or even see a whole document.

What am I not understanding? I'm usually pretty good at
this stuff.
