Changing desktop size without altering resolution?

Hey!
Is it possible to change the desktop size while leaving the same
resolution? I remember getting that result once, the whole desktop
didn't fit on screen but the visible area followed the mouse...
At that time I didn't want that, but now I need to reproduce it (I have
an application that requires a larger desktop then what my resolution
allows me...).
Any ideas?
