Screen malfunction/Dawn of War

I have installed a game called Dawn of War on both my standard desktop and my
laptop {Dell Inspiron} On my desktop, the game works just fine and doesn't
affect anything at all. However, on my laptop, the game displays with two
black bars on the sides (very much like widescreen on TVs, except the
opposite.) This wouldn't bother me at all if the condition didn't remain
after I closed the game. But, they are still there and I don't know how to
get them off. I have tried everything I can think of, and nothing has worked.

On the laptop can you right click your desktop, go to properties -> settings
and post what the resolution of your display is.

After you've played the game and have the black bars, do these cover the
desktop, or is the usable screen simply moved to where these bars are? IE
does the mouse move behind the black bars or just to their edge.
