Screen jump

Whenever I display a new screen of data .... say I open a web page or
open an email in Eudora .... or anything similar after several seconds
the data on the screen will scroll up a line or two (the line I'm
reading moves up on the display) with no input from me.

I use a Microsoft Wheelmouse Optical and thought that perhaps the scroll
switch was flakey. So I replaced it with a new mouse - same problem.
I've uninstalled/re-installed the mouse software and also run without
that software using just the built-in driver. Still the same problem.

It happens with both IE and Firefox, Eudora and a number of other apps
(perhaps all apps - at least I don't know of any app where it *doesn't*
happen).

It's been doing this now for perhaps a month and it's very distracting -
does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be the cause?

No suggestion/solution. Just to confirm that what you describe
does happen here, too. All apps that react to the scroll
wheel, w/i a minute or so, always.

Really annoying.

Interesting. Did it start fairly recently?

Nope; MS optical wheel mouse always did that (for 2+ years
now).

BTW, I'm not blaming the mouse -- I've no idea what causes it.

Sid,

Please post what/how you found. I'm not sure what Dave
suggests.

What he's saying is that - although we jumped on the mouse as an obvious
cause of the problem, it could just as easily be a video problem. That
suggests either a problem with the video driver or the hardware (in the
latter case, most likely the hardware setup from in the video driver
software).

I've changed neither the card nor its driver recently although it might
be that other changes such as Windows Update or an application install
has affected some components that the video driver uses and caused it to
become unstable. Installing the latest driver might alleviate this. I
have a fairly critical video setup related to a cad program that I use
so I want to tread carefully on this. Since I'm in the middle of a
fairly involved project right now, it may be a little while before I
tackle the video driver.

In your case, you may want to just go ahead look for the latest driver
for your card from it's manufacturer and install it according to the
instructions. I would suggest backing up your system first if possible
(standard operating procedure in such cases actually).

Incidentally, my video card is an NVidia Quadro FX, what's yours?

Thanks for the details.

My card is NVidia GeForce 7900 GS

I'll try to update the driver, tho not sure yet when can get
to it. I'll post here whatever/whenever there's any news. My
"project" right now is to keep the taxman happy. :(
