Screen goes red after

My computer boots (win XP) up normally. I click on the
user and then once it loads the desktop the entire screen
is red. I can see the mouse pointer and bring up the task
manager but thats it. If I boot into safe mode all I get
is safe mode in the 4 corners and no desktop icons
toolbar etc. I dont think its the video because
everything else is fine till the desktop comes up. Could
this be a virus? how do iget the desktop to show again

Actually, it probably is the video card as it is only using a certain
resolution after the desktop comes up. Swap out the video card for a
known working one to test. If you can't do hardware diagnosis yourself,
take the machine to a good local repair shop.
