Scratch Disk

While trying to open pictures have started to get error
message stating. "Scratch disk is full, try to clear up
some space". What is the scratch disk and how do I clear
up space.

The above link gives a lot of info on scratch disks.
Although it pertains to Photoshop, the concept applies to
other applications.
