scrappy sound on xp

i have a creative 128 on board sound card and i have recently moved form win98 to xp
my problem is that any sound i play whether is a game or mp3 file or even a vide
i get scrappy sound and i dont have any lack of memory or high cpu usage problem

One question, since upgrading to Win XP did you also update
your soundcard drivers.

Do you have crappy speakers? It helps to post some of the
initial problem for those who come late to the question.

i've cheked my speakers on another pc, they work just fine
nothing wrong with them
