Schema master- offline

I have two domain controllers. On both machines the AD Schema mmc shows the
"Current Focus" as blank, and "The server is currently offline".

I have used Ntdsutil.exe to seize the schema role on the DC where I want it.
But, when I close and then reopen the AD Schema mmc I am back to blank and
offline.

Can anyone direct me to a solution? What are the implications of this
problem?

Thanks.

On a DC run: NETDOM QUERY FSMO to see who owns the FSMO roles

Run:

DCDIAG /D /C /V
NETDIAG /DEBUG /V

on the DCs and post only the parts in error.

Any event log ID errors?

NETDOM QUERY FSMO shows the correct DC as having the schema role.

Neither DCDIAG nor NETDIAG revealed any errors.

....and no errors relating to anything remotely connected in the Event logs.
