Scheduling anti-spyware uses loads of CPU

Hi

I've noticed that scheduling Spyware Doctor and Spybot S&D uses upwards of
90% of my cpu when they are running (and my pc slows right down). My friend
has the exact same computer and the same software running but the cpu problem
doesn't occur on his pc. I was advised by the Spybot help team to set the
priority to 'lower' in the task manager but this has made absolutely no
difference. Can anyone tell me a) why it's happening b) is it normal
behaviour c) how to correct it?

I runn Windows XP build 2600 Home SP2

I recently upgraded my memory from 512mb to 1.5 gb.

I dont suppose you are scheduling them to run at the same exact time?
That would make the hard drives work too hard.

You should do those schedules at a time you do not use the computer...
or do them manually and use a program to auto shutdown the pc when they
finish.

Also check in what mode your hard disks are working on. You should have
DMA 5 or 6. If its in PIO mode then you have a problem... solvable but post
back.

to check, right click on "my computer" > properties>hardware[tab]>device
manager[button]>go to ide controllers>right click on primary and secondary
IDE channel>Advanced Settings[TAB].

While lurking I noticed this post. I am having a similar issue when running
AVG-free taking up a lot of resources when running. Checking my settings, I
noticed that my primary IDE is DMA 5 and the secondary is PIO. If I change
the secondary to DMA 5 from PIO will this cause system issues?
Thanks in advance.

Hi

The tasks are running at different times. But the curious thing is that they
don't use as much cpu on my friend's pc. I'm afraid I'm in the dark about DMA
5 or 6 and PIO mode. I haven't heard of this. Would you mind explaining it a
little?

Hi

I don't understand the significance of the different modes but here is what
it says:
Primary IDE says Ultra DMA mode 5
Secondary IDE says DMA mode 2

Is this ok?

Yes... the secondary ide DMA mode 2 is probably your cd or DVD rom drive
and that dma mode is normal for it...

So you dont have a problem there at least...

perhaps you have lots of files and your friend does not...

It does slow my system too when I scan... thats why I am extra carful to not
install things with spyware and adware, and only run them manually from time
to time.

You could try windows defender also that is very good

Thanks Kenny. I'll take a look at those pages. Just out of interest, how can
you avoid installing adware and spyware?

So what's the problem?

As I explained in my first psot - my pc slows right down. Actually it almost
freezes. I've posted elsewhere about adding more memory because I was advised
that addingmore than a gig of ram would cause problems for windows. I
received several responses telling me this was rubbish so I went ahead and
put in a total of 1.5 gig. Now the computer crawls along!

I've not seen any examples where a computer, P3 or P4, experiences a
"slow down" when moving from 1GB to higher than 1GB. To be honest, if
your really limited by the hardware, then you've got crappy hardware,
but I suspect that you've got some other problem, unless you really have
crappy hardware.
