CPU Hog Warning-AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5.0.50

R

Rhonda Lea Kirk

The other day, I downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5.0.50. I immediately
shut off automatic updates, real-time scanning, and one other process
that loads with Windows (no, I don't remember the name, and I've already
uninstalled the program).

Right around the same time, I also updated my Logitech webcam software,
which, it turns out, is known to hog CPU.

Imagine my surprise when the uninstallation (if that's even a word) of
the Logitech software did not solve the problem I was having.

My computer was almost unusable, and I couldn't imagine what was causing
the problem. It wasn't just CPU cycles; it's a memory hog and the HDD
was spinning all the time.

After a couple of hours of "when in danger or in doubt, run in circles,
scream and shout), not to mention a good night's sleep, I ran driver
verifier. I've had this problem with Logitech before--a mouse driver was
just killing my computer--and I figured that somewhere along the line,
I'd installed something I didn't remember. Well, my memory isn't that
far gone, but sure enough, AVG had planted an unsigned driver on my
machine. I uninstalled the whole mess, and everything is running
smoothly again.

I found nothing in Google or Google Groups when I did a search, so I
thought I'd make this post for the next poor schmuck that comes along
with the same problem.

Given that I'm have a Dell laptop with XP SP2, there's no doubt in my
mind that s/he will be along shortly.

I have the Logitec Quick Cam Communicate STX and have no problems with it.
I don't run AVG but run a combo of Avira and Ewido. I frequently multitask
with many things open to the tune of more than 400 megs of commit charge
memory in use out of 1 gig. Basically I can do what I want without fear of
say aborting a DVD burn or some other sensitive application. HOWEVER, this
isn't on a Dell laptop, it's on an EMachine T6216. I didn't used to like
AMD processors but I have to admit this Athalon64 rocks.

AVG bought Ewido, which is now AVG Anti-Spyware.
I have read many reviews, and they all say AVG anti-spyware is not a
resource hog.

Well, the unidentified problem was AGV, because Logitech admits the 100%
CPU usage is a known issue, but with that said...

I have the QuickCam Pro 5000. With the QuickCam 9 software, some of us
got a BSOD every time we tried to use the cam. They came up with the
following workaround:

http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/logitech_en_amr.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2837

Then, they fixed that with the QuickCam 10 software, but, as I said, you
have that pesky 100% CPU usage to deal with, and it is a known issue,
about which nothing has been done since the end of August:

http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/logitech_en_amr.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=5336

I may not have been entirely clear, Mr. Plow. It wasn't the two
together. There's an issue with both, separately. Even after I
uninstalled the QuickCam software, the AVG Anti-Spyware driver was
killing my computer.

On my laptop, it is a terrible resource hog.

Well I would have returned that cam and demanded a full refund. The
Communicate STX I own uses no CPU and is the same device but maybe 15
bucks less. Should be no reason for 100% CPU usage. :-(

Every Logitech web cam I've installed and used in the last 5 years has
always been a cpu hog. Any other cam sw has been a-ok.

Any other peoples experiences with Logitech cam?

Put the same STX on my GF's PC and it doesn't hog the cpu either.

Everything I've used with Logitech's name on it has been terrible. There is
better stuff out there.

I use AVG 7.1.405, your must be using the pro version. I have had no
problems with my free version.

Are you aware that add/remove uninstall does not completely remove all
software completely, deleting all files, fragments or registry entries. The
uninstall programs require that you scan before and after installation [very
time consuming] [and still there is stuff remaining!]

I have tried new software and struggled to delete all of it. I have used
Total Uninstall, Zsoft Uninstaller [with partial success] , together with
RegSeeker registry cleaner, and Locked Files Wizard (LFW) to get rid of
files in use at time of deletion [at boot time]. DrDelete is very sim to
LFW.

If you have XP / XP pro, use Task Manager [part of XP] also to spot the
precise source of the problem. [processes]
Hit control-alt-delete [once only!], then use processes to see which process
is consuming cpu time. Click on the process tab to see processes, then click
on CPU to see which process is using the greatest %. I get it that you
haven't tried this from your wording. You'll be amazed.

If you still have CPU high usage levels, I suggest running one of the
HIJACKthis http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ reports and submitting it here. You
probably have some sneaky or unnecessary processes running.

Reboot! this solves about 75% of all pc problems!
