Scanning a 3D object on flatbed?

Ken

I just bought a Canon 8400F, which has done a very nice job.

However, when I tried to scan the graphics on the side of a box (with
the cover open), the unit malfunctioned. I used white paper to mask
the glass; the inner liner on the cover is white plastic.

Canon says it is not made to scan 3D objects and the scan quality may
be poor.

I am not getting any output at all. Is there a way to trick the
scanner into working with the cover open?

Put the side of the box you want to scan on the glass. Nothing between the
side of the box and the glass of the scanner bed. The scanning element is
under the glass.

Not true for the 8400F. It is true for the LiDE series.

I own a Canon CanoScan 8400F.

The Canon CanoScan 8400F will work with the lid open except if set to scan
film. You can even remove the lid if you are using the Platen.

Use Advanced mode. (Click Advanced Mode tab).
Input settings
Select source: Platen
Paper Size: Full Platen

Click the Preview button.

Give time for the lamp warming and the calibration. (it takes a few seconds
on first start).
You also may set Cropping Frame on previewed image to None. The Preferences
button is at the bottom of window.
Set the Cropping frame with dragging the mouse in the preview.

When the lid is open you get a black background in the scan. Be sure you
have something on the glass to scan. (the box).

Thank you. It worked fine with your settings. You are correct and
Canon is wrong. I don't seem to ever get a correct answewr from
Bangalore.
