Hi, I have a Canon scanner and have found that it won't work with
Vista. I have been to website to see if I can download a driver (I
was told to do this) but have found no drivers for Vista. I was able
to download one for my Epson printer so that is OK. Should I get a
new scanner or can someone help me with another solution? Thanks

I have the same problem with a Canon printer. A visit to the Canon website
reveals "we are currently creating drivers that are compatabile with
Windows Vista..."

Not that it will help you directly but I moved a Canon Selphy CP730
photo printer and a Canon 8400F scanner from my XP PC to a new Vista PC.
I found updated drivers on the Canon site in April 2007 ( for interest
cp730x32mux.exe V 3.4.0 and S5905EN.exe V 10.2.2.0 plus 'ToolBox'
S7119EN.exe V 4.9.3.2 ) which installed and work OK on the Vista PC.
Scanner was purchased Nov 2005, printer Nov 2006 - perhaps yours are
older ?

Tom

Hello maeve,

Ask Cannon if they will provide a driver for the scanner, then you will know
if you have to buy a new one.

Hi,

Check for your scanner here:
https://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/Default.aspx

It will tell you if your scanner is natively supported or not. If not, then
you need drivers from the manufacturer and they should be contacted for
such. If they indicate that they will not be supporting this unit under
Vista, then it's time for a new scanner.

This is a frequent problem when you upgrade to a new operating system. There
are not always drivers for all your existing equipment. You have several
choices:

1. Wait for Canon to come out with a driver. They *may* just not have
released one yet.

2. Call or E-mail Canon. They may be able to tell you if they have plans for
a new driver.

3. Look harder for a driver. When Windows XP came out, I couldn't find a
driver for my UMAX scanner on the USA UMAX web site. But I eventually found
one that worked fine on the UK UMAX site.

4. Buy a new scanner, They aren't very expensive.

My current scanner is a Canon LiDE60 (I think; I'm not home to check it).
Can has a driver for that and it works fine under Vista.

Another possible solution is a software scanning program called
Vuescan. It supports a number of Canon scanners.

Don't hold your breath waiting for Canon to release a driver. I have a
perfectly good HP scanner but there is no driver for it. HP says they will
not be producing a driver for it as it is too old and there doesn't seem to
be any other solution.

Canon is legendary for their lack of support for Linux. I find that HP and
Epson both have excellent support - I take it you've already found the
avasys.jp site for Epson. The choice is yours, but I've not purchased a
piece of canon equipment for about ten years - because of their lack of
Linux support. I don't support folks who don't support me.

My sincerest apologies to everyone - my previous reply is obviously of no
relevence here. I was up all night with a sick friend, very tired, and
lost track of which group I was posting to.

If Vuescan will not work and you like your scanner you would be better off
going back to or buying a copy of XP rather than getting a new scanner.
With XP you will have an OS that actually works. What a concept.
Canon is in no hurry to support Vista because most Vista users are users of
limited sophistication who can be forced into buying new hardware and Canon
knows its corporate customers will have nothing to do with Vista. Canon is a
ruthless marketing machine and that philosophy has served them well. Canon
product cycles are notoriously short and often consist only of new packaging
of old products, particularly in their consumer scanner and printer lines.
Actually, the majority of their cameras also.
Epson has broader support for Vista but many of its Vista drivers do not
have the functionality of XP drivers. For example there is no print preview
in the Vista 1280 driver.

It's up to the manufacturer to provide new drivers for Vista and many choose
not to do so, especially for older machines. I had to buy a new printer
and scanner when I switched to Vista.

I see a bit of irony here. Folks have always complained about Linux not
supporting every off the wall, designed for ms, printer and scanner. So
you install vista and have to buy new peripherals!
