Scanner problems

I have a Plustek OpticPro 9636T flatbed scanner. First off, I went to the
Plustek website and they don't offer support for such an 'old hardware.' With
that out of the way, I came here.

There is a problem with the lamp. It is not blown, let me explain. If I
unplug the power to the scanner and plug it back in, the light comes on. When
I open any scanner type program (I use Adobe Photoshop, but I get the same
result with anything) the light goes off. I tried something, I took a
flashlight and held it over the scanner document and scanned. There was a
very very dim faded picture on the screen, so there IS information being
sent. Any idea on how I can keep the lamp on?

Note: There is a scanner utility that controls the lamp. It is set to "on"
but it is still off.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

My first reaction is that there is no driver available for this older
scanner that will work on XP and this is not a plug and play scanner that XP
recognize automatically. Therefore you cannot start it, although there is
nothing physically wrong with it.
Have you used this scanner with a version of Windows prior to XP? If it
worked on Windows 2000, there is a chance that the driver you have will work
on XP.

I used it with Windows ME (yeah laugh, it's okay) prior to XP. It has worked
with XP in the past, it just seemed to stop out of no where. I tried changing
BIOS/CMOS settings (EPP, ECP) and that didn't help. In fact, the ECP causes a
memory error and I get a BSOD on startup. I am lost, because like I said it
has worked on XP it just suddenly stopped.

Perhaps it has died and gone to scanner heaven.

Is that possible? I'll say this much to see if it sways your decision.

The light goes on until I open a scanner utility (it uses the TWIAIN
interface, I run it through Adobe Photoshop) and then it goes off. I tried
something though...When I scanned, I help a desk lamp over the scanner (lid
open of course) and when the preview came up, there was a very dim picture on
the screen of what I was trying to scan. So that means the scanner works, but
the light just isn't staying on.

I really meant that paying to get it fixed might easily be more than a new
one.
As the light goes out when you try to scan, it is possible that there is a
bad connection to the light which is affected by movement.

at the "

And the website that hosts it, is in some other language so I can't even
figure out where the file went. I'll keep trying though, thanks.
