Scanner problem

When I tried to install a Tevion flat bed scanner on my HP computer running
Windows XP, having transferred it from another computer, I forgot to re-read
the instructions. These state quite clearly that the software should be
installed before connecting the scanner to the USB port. Unfortunately, I
connected the scanner first and then installed the software. The result is
that when I try to use the scanner the system tells me that no scanner is
connected. I uninstalled all the relevant software, restarted the computer
and started from scratch, loading the software first this time. The problem
was still there. In addition, if the scanner is connected to the USB port,
then when I try to open "My Computer" I get an empty window with a waving
flashlight and so cannot check connected hardware.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Tried doing a System Restore to a date that precedes the initial, wrong
installation of the scanner? If possible, do so and install the scanner
correctly --- USB software first and then connect the scanner.
