scanner not found - what more to try?

I have an Acer Scanwit 2720s. I bought it used a few months ago. I
couldn't get it to work on my desktop computer or my laptop computer. I
finally gave up trying after awhile.

I have gotten another desktop, and I am trying again, but still no
luck. Hopefully, somebody here will have some advice. I am beginning to
think that this is a problem with the scanner itself. I bought it used,
so I cannot return it. And I don't know of any way to prove it is the
problem or eliminate it. If it is broken, then I just need to buy a
different scanner.

Every time I try to use the scanner, I get an error message that the
scanner was not found. It says to check that the scanner is powered on,
and that the scanner is connected properly.

The scanner is powered on just fine. It does the startup sequence that
is mentioned in the manual. Connection is fine as well. I have even
bought a second scsi cable to rule out the cable. And I put a
terminator on the empty plug (I've tried it with and without). I have
also tried all of the scsi ID numbers, rebooting between tries.

I have also removed all twain files and totally reinstalled the
scanner.

I have two flatbed scanners, one scsi and one usb, both of which work
just fine with the computers.

Both desktops have windows 98. The laptop is win xp.

I had an scsi card already (non pci). I tried it with the old card and
the new card (pci card that came with the scanner). I have downloaded a
newer version of miraphoto and tried vuescan as well.

I just can't come up with any other reason why the scanner isn't
recognized by any of the computers.

It is very likely that the scanner is dead on arrival.
I had a 2720S that died. I trashed it and bought a Minolta ScanDual IV,

The 2720S worked very well on Windows 98, but was a problem to get working
in Windows XP SP1 and impossible to work in Windows XP SP2.

The MiraFoto 2012 that you download from:
http://www.benq.com/drivers/imaging_drivers.html
Works great in Windows 98.
If you install the original Acard SCSI PCI card that came with the scanner.

If you do not want to use the original SCSI card, do not install the Acard
driver.
Do a custom install and uncheck the Acard driver.

Make sure that the SCSI ID switch in the back of the scanner is set to 2 and
no other device ID is set to 2. The Scanwit 2720S will work on ID 3 if you
reinstall the software.

The software has to "see" the scanner to ID the port. The scanner will not
work if you change the ID after installing the software.

I have the Miraphoto 2012, and that hasn't helped. But I see now what
may be the problem. I will have to try it tonight. There was no mention
in the manual what ID number to set it to, so it was not set at 2 when
I installed the software. Since then, I have been changing the number
and rebooting the computer, but it sounds like that is useless.

So, do I just uninstall the software, shut down the computer. Attach
the scanner again, while set to 2, then reinstall?

When your scanner died, did it still go through the initial sequence
when you turned it on? The lights blinking, and the slide carrier
coming out a little and going back in? Or did it quit altogether?
Thanks! I will try this tonight after work.

There are uninstall instructions for completely removing Scanwit software.
http://12.145.38.148/support/faqDetail.asp?CATEGORY_ID=240000435
Pay special attention to Q6. Then read Q7. It is for Windows XP, but the
same applies to Windows 98.
It is a good idea to print the instructions.

Backup the Twain*.* and Twunk*.* files in C:\Windows before deleting them
per the instructions in Q6 above. (you may have to restore them.) Mirafoto
is supposed to install those files.

MiraFoto is very hard to get working is Windows XP. Not very hard to do in
Windows 98.

You should uninstall the MiraFoto, set the scanner ID to 2, then Disconnect
the scanner.

If you are using another SCSI card do not remove the drivers for it, If
Windows is happy with the SCSI Card and other devices work with it, it will
work for the Scanwit as long as there are no ID conflicts. All SCSI devices
must have their own ID.

If you do not want the Acard (SCSI card) installed, do a custom install of
MiraFoto.
Install MiraFoto, reboot computer. Shut down the computer.

Connect and turn on the scanner. Windows 98 will run the hardware wizard and
install the Twain driver for Scanwit 2720S.

Open the TWAIN in a photo editor Via Import and Select TWAIN (It is called
MiraFoto). Then Acquire.

What I remember about how my scanner died, It got to not making the scans
correctly. It started throwing errors and freezing. Sometimes it would work
well then throw an error. I think I could make 6-12 perfect scans than
suddenly it would throw an error.

One error was "Read Image Data failure. Please check if the LED indicator
stays on (ready mode). Code(ffff:0022)".
The other error was "Read Image Data failure. Please check if the LED
indicator stays on (ready mode). Code(ffff:0027)".

Both of those errors are generated in the scanner itself.
I can't believe I still have those screen shots! I tossed that scanner over
a year ago.

When I spoke to tech support years ago, they told me to make sure that the slide tray was snapped clsed properly. That solved my issue!
