Scanned files into word 2003

I find that I am having to scan documents to use them in a Word file.
Presently I am scanning them as jpeg files, and then inserting them into my
word document.
I have also saved them as Word files, to insert that file into my current
document.
I am wondering if there is a more efficient way to bring these files into my
work.

If your scanner offers OCR capabilities (most do), you can scan them as text
instead.
