I'm having probs with my PC and scandisk just keeps restarting ad
infinitum.

Is there a freeware alternative to scandisk - perhaps something a bit
more powerful?

See if this helps:
Restart your computer in pure DOS
Type: scandisk/surface/auto
That will do a physical scan of the disk and automatically fix
errors.
When it's done run Defrag in Windows

Will do. Many thanks.

Restart:
Win98 = F8 or the Ctrl-key
WinXP is a little more complicated
If you have another operating system besides 98 write back. I'll
cross-post this to 24hoursupport.helpdesk

do scan disk and defrag after booting into safe mode

Thanks Riz. I've done this but the scandisk took around 10 hours on the
thorough setting (overnight). Is this normal?

Hello

Many thanks. I am running ME.

Dont know if this is part fo the problem, but many regard ME as one of
the more bug prone MS products

Can you try another OS? IIRC DOS worked with ME
