i've tried to do a scandisc to my windowsxp to clean it up it gets about 3
notches into it and it will stay that way all day all night what can i do to
fix this and make it run through.

XP does not contain the ScanDisk program. If you upgraded from ME or Win 9X
OS this was left behind. You need to use CHKDSK which comes with Windows
XP. You can run it many different ways but the easiest is to start Windows
Explorer. Single right click on the drive letter you want to check. Left
click on properties. Click on tools. Click on Error checking - Check Now.
When the dialog box opens, click on Automatically fix file system errors.
Normally leave Scan for and attempt... unchecked. Click on start. The
computer will ask if you want to scan on net boot. Answer Yes to scheduling
on next reboot. Close any dialog boxes and then reboot the computer to run
the chkdsk program.

Boot to XP Setup CD, and press 'r' for Repair. The Recovery Console prompt
will let you run the command:

CHKDSK /R
