Does "Check disk for errors" not work at all, keep restarting in connection
with disk activity or just lack the delayed error check scheduling?

Have you clicked the "Performance and maintenance" link in the "Help and
Support Center" for instructions?

Scandisk doesn't work because it's not a part of Windows XP. Chkdsk is! If
you truly have a setting for scandisk, it is a holdover from a failed
upgrade from Win9x. It shouldn't even be there.
