Windows 95 and 98 have a utility called "Scandisc". I
cannot find this on "Windows XP Home Edition". What
happened to it?

Windows XP disk utility is called Check Disk
To start Check Disk
1. Open My Computer, right-click a drive, and then click Properties.
2. On the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now
then you get a dialog box, check "Automatically fix file system errors"
3. Click Start

You'll then a message saying that it needs exclusive access and will run next
time you reboot.

Windows XP uses "Checkdisk" and not "Scandisk" used in previous versions of Windows.
The Checkdisk function will begin when you restart your computer:

In a recently previous posting I asked WHY chkdsk won't run for me when it
has up until yesterday; even in safe mode.no way. I have searched and find
nothing about this and i also must assume that no one else has ever had this
problem or no one knows why it won't function(?) Is it possible that 1. it
is too simple a problem to be bothered with 9doubt that) or 2. No one knows
anything about it. 3. It won't run because there is no indication for it to
do so....I would think it could be run whenever i wanted it to.. C'mon MVPs

Do you have ZoneAlarm installed and did you recently upgrade it to
version 5.0? It has been reported that ZoneAlarm 5.0 may be the root cause
of your problem. Uninstalling ZoneAlarm Version 5.0 solves the issue.

I too have been looking for a solution for my error "cannot open volume for direct access". I do have Zone Alarm 5 installed, but why would I want to uninstall my firewall, It is very important to have. I did try to disable it, changed preference not to start on startup. But these didn't work. I guess I'll have to contact Zone Labs, this has been very annoying. I also want to thank everbody for comments and replies this group has been very helpful.
