Click Start button>All Programs>Accessories. In the accessories drop down
menu click on Command Prompt. When the command prompt window opens type
'chkdsk' (without the quotes) and press Enter. Your disk should now be
checked. Alternatively you can schedule a scan from My Computer Properties
window.
Scan disk is called chkdsk in xp

Win XP doesn't have scan disk. That's in Windows 9X, not the NT kernel
OS's. It has a defrag made by Exe Soft for MS, who also makes the
considerably better

Diskeeper 8.0
http://www.diskeeper.com/coverpage.asp

You can try Diskeeper free (full version) for 30 days and should. Perfect
Disk is another very popular and very effective defragger. To reach the
defrag in XP Start>Rt. Click "C" Drive or drive your OS is on, Properties,
Tools Tab>Defrag. You don't have to do it too often, some say too often is
hard on your hard drive.

If you want to see your performance optimal, do something that isn't done by
most and should be. Give yourself at least 20% free space on each drive you
want to defrag so that you can get it done well.

Also a valuable tip on a Windows or Mac, I understand this is XP and XP is
right now only on a Windows machine, although Longhorn features are
looking more and more like Mac's OS X Panther-- is to move your page file to
another drive from the OS which will protect it from becoming fragmented
particularly if you use a lot of graphics intensive apps.

I apologize for the big mistake. I completely misread and *called chkdsk
defrag.* Still good defrag advice but off subject completely. Besides
good info in the MSKB and Help and Support on chkdsk, try

Disk Management Tools in XP
http://www.labmice.net/windowsxp/DiskMgmt/tools.htm

Also a useful tip is to run Chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console as one of
the most effective ways to run Chkdsk.

Greetings --

WinXP does not have a program called "Scandisk," as this was a
Win9x/Me program. Instead, because WinXP is descended from the
WinNT/2K OS family, it has a command line utility called "Chkdsk,"
which performs much better, as it's not burdened with presenting a
pretty picture of moving blocks of color while it's working.

Start > Run > Cmd > Chkdsk.exe /? for the correct syntax and
available
options.

Alternatively, double-click My Computer > right-click the desired
hard drive > Properties > Tools > Error-checking/Check Now. This will
run Chkdsk, normally on the next reboot.
