scan disk in XP Home edition

Could you possibly be referring to Disk Error Checking? If so, open My Computer, right-click on the drive you wish to check, select Properties, choose the Tools tab, and under Error Checking click Check Now...

It is in the same place as it was in Win9x/ME.. right click on my computer,
go to Properties - Tools - Error Checking (used to be Scandisk)..
