Check Disk / Scan Disk

Windows XP Home Edition: The instructions say to go to my computer, local disk, properties then Tools tab. However, I don't have a tools tab. Consequently, I am unable to then go to error checking, check now, disk scan

Do you know how I can activate scan disk from the menu? P.S. When I turned off the computer via the button and then turned the computer back on, the check disk utility ran. There has to be a better way to activate it. Can anyone help

Also what is the program name? I tried scandskw.exe and the program could not be found.
