SB Audigy Install Problems

J

J.R.

Greetings.

My system specs are as follows:
Pentium 4 2.53 GHz
1024MB DDR-RAM
GeForce 4 Ti4600
Sound Blaster Audigy w/ Internal Live! Drive
Intel 845PE Chipset, on a ASUS P4PE motherboard
Windows XP Pro with all updates to date

------------------

My system has been acting rather peculiar as of late. Because of a problem
with a game, I decided to reinstall my sound card drivers. However, while
doing so, it appeared that I got no sound at all. Hence I downgraded to my
last set of drivers and now I can hear sound fine and dandy.

However, there keeps popping up a "Multimedia Audio Controller" in my Device
Manager, that's an unknown device. I'm guessing that this is the Audigy.
However, I have installed the drivers from the disk with no problems at all.

A screenshot may be found here:

Thanks in advance for your help,
J.R.

Hi,

I don't have an Audigy card to test, so I can't tell you what you SHOULD see
under "Sound, video and game controllers" in Device Manager, and whether
anything is missing, but.. if your motherboard has onboard audio, are you
sure that it's disabled in the BIOS? Perhaps that's the "Multimedia Audio
Controller" device that keeps appearing?

Alternatively, you can try to identify the unknown device, which might give
you a chance of tracking down the appropriate driver.
To do this:

1) run the Registry Editor, REGEDIT.EXE (if you're not comfortable with
using REGEDIT, then read no further - it's quite easy to mess up your system
if you make a mistake)
2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI
3) This shows the PCI devices found on your system, in several keys of the
form:
VEN_xxxx&DEV_yyyy&SUBSYS...etc..
for example,
VEN_8086&DEV_244E&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_C2

Under each key is a sub-key, labelled with a long hexadecimal number, eg
"4&252d6e8&0&0008". Highlighting this number will show several values in the
right-hand pane - including one called "Device Desc".
4) For each of the VEN_xxxx keys, the REG_SZ Device Desc value shows the
"friendly name" of the device, as displayed in Device Manager. Navigate each
VEN_ line in turn until you find one with a DeviceDesc string of, in your
case, "Multimedia Audio Device".
5) Now make a note of the VEN_ line under which this appears. For example,
VEN_8086&DEV_2440&SUBSYS....
This tells you the manufacturer and device IDs of the unknown device; in
the above example, the VENdor ID is 8086, and the DEVice ID is 2440.
6) You can now look up the name of the manufacturer at

From the looks of the screenshot your Audigy card is installed properly,
think that motherboard has onboard sound. If so, check to see if it is
disabled in the BIOS?
If disabled in BIOS and you think it is something to do with the Audigy card
goto www.creative.com and browse the discussion forums there, may have
better luck there.

It looks to me that the sound card is using the default driver. This would
explain the listing of a multimedia audio controller. Try to upgrade the
driver in device manager and be sure that the latest driver is located in
the listing. Jym
