I have a csv file that we upload to our host system once a month. Th
csv file type is all that the host system will read. Another employe
updates the csv file before I upload it. There is a column for th
maturity date of the security that is entered in the spreadsheet.
The format for the date field is mmddyyyy. Excel will drop th
leading zero from the date field if it is in for example January o
01. In excel it will just show the 1 (1152004 instead of 01152004

The host system needs the leading zero to process the date correctly.
You can change the formatting of the cells in the column to text an
then it will display the leading zero in excel, but when you go t
save the file it says some formatting or features are incompatibl
with this file format. That's when we lose the leading zero's.
then open up the file in notepad and add in the leading zero'
manually. Is there a way to automate this procedure or change it s
I don't have to keep adding the zero's back in. I thought abou
having the other person use notepad and update the values, but I'm
little leary of that. The don't have any problems changing thing
using excel, but I'm afraid they might in notepad. Any ideas o
better ways of doing this

Sparky,

Are you sure you're losing the leading zeroes? Open the saved text file
with NotePad to see what's really in it. Excel will change stuff like that
if you're using it to reopen the file.

Failing that, try the Text Write Program at www.smokeylake.com/excel.

When opening the file in notepad the leading zeros were gone so
tried the text write program you had a link for and it worked great.
That was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for your help
