Saving twice at the same time

When I use Word documents they seem to be saving twice. The first file name
is the correct one, and the second has a "~$" in front of it. When I try to
open up these documents again, it comes up unreadable.
 
Hi Moses -

Do *not* try to open the files whose names begin with ~, they are temporary
files used by the software & not intended to be opened by the user. They will
(or should) get deleted when you exit from Word.

Is there any way I can get the temporary files to be deleted automatically?
