Saving Sent Hotmail via Outlook Connector to Various Local PST Folders

Pete Beach

I have been using Outlook (currently 2007) for a long time and it is a cornerstone of my various communication channels. I have 2 Hotmail accounts that I have been sending/receiving mail through the supplied HTTP protocol, as well as several other POP3 and IMAP mailboxes. The organization of all my email correspondance is through my local PST file. Whenever I send an email from any account, I go to Options/Saved Sent Item, and then choose from about 50 various/nested folders within the PST folder structure. (Believe me, I know them so well, it's very efficient and not cumbersome. The folders are archived regularly to prevent the PST from getting too large.) This has worked very well for me.

Then comes Outlook Connector/MAPI interface. I admit before OC 12.1 it was unusable for me as I found the connectivity very unreliable. I have recently tried the 12.1 and I find it OK. In fact the MAPI connectivity is now more reliable than the HTTP connection, with the added benefit that my Contacts and Calendar are synced on the Live servers. However, I admit I use that very little as I do 98% of my stuff from Outlook.

Here's my problem and it's big for me. When sending mail from my Hotmail account via Outlook Connector, the Save Sent Item functionality no longer works. It doesn't even tell me it's not working. So none of my sent items get put in the local PST folder that I want - a system I've been using many years for organization. I have to go after sending the mail to my Hotmail Sent Items and then manually put them in the folder I want them to go. This is a pain and a serious step backwards for me. I would go back to the HTTP protocol as it worked fine for my purposes, but I fear that Microsoft will stop supporting that protocol from within Outlook now that they have Outlook Connector. So...

1. Is there any way around this issue (without setting up a LOT of rules which I certainly do not want to do)?

2. Is this a bug (since it still allows me to pick a Save Sent Item folder and doesn't place it there and doesn't notify me)?

3. Will this be corrected in the future or will I have to go back to the HTTP protocol for sending/receiving my Hotmail? (I know most people here don't know, but I did notice some Outlook-MVPs around.)

Thanks in advance..

FWIW, HTTP will be going away. You'll need to use the connector or POP3 (if
available).

What method are you using the save the sent items in a different folder?

Hi Diane. Thanks for your response. I was seeing the writing on the wall with HTTP and this really concerns me unless this is fixed within the OC/MAPI protocol.

As I wrote in my OP, I create a mail message by New/Reply/etc. On the top of the new mail window, I click on the Options menu, then click on the Save Sent Items on the Options ribbon. This then allows me to choose which folder I want a copy of my email I'm sending saved to. This has always worked with all types of mail accounts when sending a mail via HTTP or SMTP from Outlook - but not Outlook Connector/MAPI.
