saving registry settings

Hello All

At the moment I am having problems saving changes to the registry in Windows XP Pro. I am obviously making the changes with while logged on with the Administrator account, but when I make a change the setting is not retained and the system defaults back to its old setting when I restart the system.

I have looked throough the local security settings and can't see a setting that should be changed, but I may have missed something.

I would appreciate any help on this one.

Does the PC shut down properly?

Could it be doing a system restore on boot?

yes the PC is shutting down fine. There is just no option to save the registry settings in the file menu.
