Saving outlook pst file to the I:\ Drive

B

BearMuffy

Good evening

I am using Microsoft outlook 2003 and I am trying to save my outlook
files (both personal folders and contact list (the PST File?)) to a
drive other then the default c:\ Drive.

I have had on more than one occasion had the system crash and have
lost these files forever when on the C:\ drive.

Is there a way I can have these files (file) saved on a drive other
than the C:\ Drive. I mean that whenever I use outlook the files is
on a drive other then the c:\ drive so that if I have a system crash I
can just restore windows and outlook and then go out to the drive and
pull these (this) file up from the saved drive??

I'm asusming that I: is a network location and is backed up? If not then I:
drive could also fail meaning you'll lose everything once again.

Anyway the following steps should work.

1. Close outlook and then move your PST file to your new location.

2. Start outlook...it will not launch as the file cannot be found but it
will prompt you for its location. Path to the file and select it. Outlook
will then fail to open so close it down and open it again...bingo it works.

Hope that helps.

Dear,

Ofcourse there is a way (where is this "I" drive - hope it is in your pc -
other wise not a good solution).
1.close outlook, locate the current pst file, and copy to a folder in "I"
drive.
2. Go to control panel "mail", email accounts, click view or change existing
email accounts, click new outlook data file, make your selection(you will be
promted to select either an 2003 outlook file or earlier version of outlook
file)(hope you are using a perfect 2003 outlook data file),
3. You will be prompted to a "create or open outlook data file", under save
in go to "I" drive and chose the pst file which you copied earlier. Click OK
and OK.
4. You will be back to the same screen of "Email Accounts", there you can
see "deliver new email to the following location", click there and select
your newly added personal folder, and then click Finish. You will be prompted
for an "Account Manager information" saying that "your default mail box has
changed....." click OK to accept.
5. You will be back to the mail setup-outlook box, there click on the data
file and you can see 2 personal folder one from the "C" drive and other from
the "I" drive. click and remove the personal folder from "C" drive(please
remember the location). (If you have any Archived folder don't remove now -
that you can do in a later stages explained as above)
6. Click on close, close.
7. Start outlook - you will be prompted to Accept the changes you made
(simply OK to continue).

Hope this helps you more

on a drive other then the C:\drive. Learned a long time ago that if
the C:\drive has a hard crash all the data is in all likelihood gone.

I also have a 300 gig maxtor one touch for back up also so I am just
adding one more layer of protection with this... Cant be to safe.....

Great simple instructions to follow... Looks like this is the
trick...Thanks for the help..

For ease of use, why not use the Personal Folders Backup feature from
Microsoft?

Dear,

Please do the step what I explained in the first reply. For the backup you
can simply install a "personal folder backup" (pfbackup.exe from MS - free
download from MS)
and point to one of the folder on your Maxtor external harddisk.

Hope this helps you more

The same is true for any drive.

Make sure Outlook is closed when you back up. PSTs do not reliably copy
when they are open.

hey... great... thanks for the tip on the PF Backup.... going to get
it now and take a look at it... Heck redundant back ups cant hurt as
I have more than enough HD space and the file is so small....
