Saving "Normal.dotm"

R

Richard Diamond

Every time I try to save changes to the "Normal.dotm" template, the system
refuses to do it. The error message tells me that the template is in use by
another program. It does this even when no other programs are running. I get
the same error message if I try to erase the Normal.dotm template and start
with a new copy. I tried shutting Word down, going directly to the template
file and erasing the "Normal.dotm". That was also blocked.

Why do I get this error message? How can I get around the rror. Right now,
I cannot save the Macros I design tot he Normal.dotm template.

Repeating Graham Mayor's currently "invisible" answer (posted via NNTP):

*How* are you saving the changes? Are you opening normal.dotm in Word?
If not then you probably have an orphan lock file -

I have often thought that answering users' questions was a waste of my
time - if the posts are not appearing, then that would tend to confirm it :(

I think this has been going on for quite some time. Checking the web
interface, I notice that (some) messages are missing from October 12, at
least. :-(

I had the feeling I was being ignored - I am not sure whether I am happy or
not to have it confirmed that it was nothing personal.
Life is far too short to mess around with web based forums. If this isn't
fixed, I may just pull the plug :(

For a while, I did share your feeling of being ignored, and I didn't like
it. :)

I'd be surprised if the issues aren't fixed after the weekend.

MS is (sort of) aware of the problem, which is to say that the appropriate
person has been notified. I don't know how easy this will be to fix,
however. My enthusiasm is definitely running low, and when they kill off
NNTP, as they appear determined to do, that's probably going to be The End
for me. As Graham says, life is too short for Web forums.

Are you saying that the decision has been made to stop supporting NNTP
groups? That's sad.

I can certainly use a web interface, but I don't like the *particular* web
interface that is currently available.

If a decision has been made, no one has the nerve to tell us, but the
continuing migration to forums (including creating new forums that have no
NNTP equivalent) is interpreted by many as the handwriting on the wall.
