Saving inserted files

I have writted my thesis as several Word documents, one for each chapter,
using Word 2003. I then put them together as one final version using Tools,
Insert, File for each document. This has worked well, and I have a final
document as I want it to look.

However, the final doc, when saved, is only 21K so I suspect that the
individual files (which collectively are several 10s of MB) are not included
in this. This is also suggested by the fact that when I save the final
version onto a flash memory stick and transfer it to a new pc (which does not
have the original source documents) it cannot read it.

So my question is, how do I save the final version 'as is'... i.e. with all
the text and elements from the inserted documents, so that it can exist as a
stand alone document that can be used and printed from other pc's. (note, I
did not insert the files as links, I inserted the actual files).

Thanks for any help.

When you inserted the files, did you use "Insert as Link"? It sounds as if
you've got IncludeText fields; you can check on this by pressing Alt+F9 to
display the field codes (if any).

Thanks for the reply. No, the files were just inserted, not as links. I tried
the ALT-F9 trick before!
