I found IE6 with latest patches promopts to save some .jpg
or .gif images as untitiled.bmp. I tried the method
described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 810978 but
it did not solve the problem. I noticed that the
properties of those images list unknown file type, date
created and date modified. 2 ref. sites are:

What's the reason behind?

That happens when the Temporary Internet Files are too full. In IE click
Tools | Internet Options. Click Delete Files in the Temporary Internet
files section of the General tab. On the next window place a check mark in
the box to Delete all offline content.

Thanks, but I'd tried to delete all temp files / offline
contents as well as cookies before trying again. I've also
confirmed that status of all downloaded programs
were "Installed" instead of "unknown" or "Damaged".

I only checked your first site, but the reason appears to be that the images
are not saved in cache, so when you try to save the picture the only thing
that IE can do is offer you the screen display, which is a BMP image.
