Save Picture As.. is saving every jpg with the extension .jpe

My IE6 and Avant Browser's Save Picture As.. is saving every jpg with the
extension .jpe and rendering all images unusable as the file format is
'Unkown'. Even if I delete the .jpe extension then save it as a jpg it is
saved as and unknown file format. This has only just started happening and
doesn't effect Netscape or Firefox and gif's work fine on all. Strangely
enough, if I search for an image in Google the same problem occurs if I try
to save the search result but if i click the link to go to the source of the
image then right click to save it doesn't do it and it saves fine!!!??
I have emptied the online and offline Temp Files, I have run a jpe,jpg
associations REG fix (found online after reading another post here). None of
these things have made a difference. Can anyone help as this is a really
annoying lack of functionality.

Hi Spencer :)

You don't mention which version of Windows you have, but, try the following
and see if it helps:

Cannot save target as BMP or JPEG etc

Try the information here:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

also......

Another possibility is that you have checked Do not save encrypted pages to
disk on the Advanced tab of Tools>Internet Options, and the picture is on a
page
reached by a secure https:// connection.

and………

260650 - Internet Explorer Does Not Save Graphics Files in the Proper Format
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;260650

Right-Clicking, Selecting 'Save Picture As' Does Not Save Image with Correct
Extension
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;250747

Hope this helps.

Hi Jan and thanks for these suggestions.

Unfortunately I have tried all of these already (accept the multiple periods
one as it doesn't apply) and they had no effect.

In desperation I phoned my work IT dept (even though problem on my own PC)
and they came up with the answer!! I'll detail it here for any others with
the same problem -

To resolve this you must edit the Registry. (Start > Run > Regedit)
Explore to - HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\ContentType\image\jpeg
In the rght side you will see the 'Extension' value is likely to be .jpe (if
it isn't then this isn't your solution)
Double click on the word 'Extension' and change it to .jpg
Close the Registry Editor and all should be well again!

Thanks for your efforts Jan (and thanks Phil in IT).

As someone of very humble abilities, that has found these forums invaluable
many times, I am glad to offer something in return (even if I was only the
conduit).
